Is Penguin Just Another Gimmick Clothing Line?
Penguin clothing and tshirt currently have a strong cult following. You can find their clothing in some of the edgier high street shops, but they have yet to hit the mainstream. The Penguin brand has a very unusual back-story. It began life as a manufacture of underwear more than 100 years ago. In the 1950s, though, something strange happened. One of the salesmen for the original underwear company was walking through downtown Manhattan when he accidentally took a wrong turn. He ended up in a back alley where he was greeted with the macabre sight of a taxidermist. In the window of the taxidermists, there was a collection of stuffed penguins. For some reason—known only to himself probably—he took rather a shine to one of the penguins. He bought it and he named it Pete. Pete the penguin went everywhere with him, he even flew him across the skies. Unfortunately, on one particular flight, he accidentally knocked Pete’s head off! A quip from one of the flight attendants lead the salesman to come up with the innovative idea of creating a clothing range with an emblem of Pete the penguin as its signature logo. Original Penguin was born.
Since that time, they have come a long way. They shot to fame in America during the late 50s and 60s, where they were worn by such greats as Frank Sinatra. Over the years, their popularity waned, but today they have made a comeback.
